Ocean & Communities: North Atlantic

A multimedia project supported by the Adventure Canada/Explorer’s Club Young Explorer’s program

Communities of the North Atlantic

Status: Rough cut

This was a personal multimedia project shot in 2018 over a period of two weeks on a small expedition ship that departed from Aberdeen, Scotland and arrived in Reykjavik, Iceland. Under the constraints of the ship’s itinerary and unforeseen changes due to weather, I aimed to learn, through a variety of perspectives, about the relationships that each community had with the ocean, in anticipation of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s 2020 goals for protected areas.

The goal of this project was to create an immersive story using video and a heavy reliance on ambient sound and audio interviews, that put the audience in the places in which it was filmed, and into the minds of those who shared their stories, to spur empathy for the experiences of both place and people.

The full multimedia story can be viewed here.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

I am grateful for the people who gave me their time, and shared their knowledge and experiences, both on and off the ship.

Specifically, thank you to the following people:

  • David Parnaby, Warden, Fair Isle Bird Observatory (Fair Isle, Shetlands)

  • Dania Johansen, Teacher, (Vagur, Faroe Islands)

  • Birgir Enni, Chef, Tour Operator (Torshavn, Faroe Islands)

  • Bjarni Mikkelson, Scientist, Faroese Museum of Natural History (Torshavn, Faroe Islands)

  • Gvendur Gudmundsson, Captain and Retired Fisherman (Reykjavik, Iceland)

  • John Dudley, Geologist and research associate, Arctic Institute of North America, University of Calgary (Calgary, Alberta)

  • Inge Thomson, Scottish musician, who allowed me to use her music
